Child welfare and protection

This component served as a prelude to the our Alternative Rite of Passage Initiative and was part of our action-oriented longitudinal study on Children at Risk of FGM/C. Girls aged six years and below were enrolled in the program for protection against harmful traditional practices as well as neglect, abuse and exploitation. Their growth was monitored from infancy to make sure that they were reaching their health and developmental milestones. Continued dialogue and education was conducted with the parents to ensure the girls were not cut. These parents were beneficiaries of one or more of our integrated health and empowerment activities
Once the girls were enrolled, they were registered into the Alternative Rites of Passage initiative.
My baby tree

Building upon our Child Welfare and Protection component, the My Baby Tree Initiative promoted tree planting for an eco-friendly environment. When children were registered with the child welfare program, parents of the enrolled children each planted a tree on enrollment day.
This action served as a symbol of their commitment to improve their children’s well-being while contributing to environmental restoration and inculcating a culture of environmental protection and management among children and adults. The growth of the trees were monitored as much as the children were cared for. The girls assumes responsibility to care for the plants when they were old enough to do so.
Non-participating families from the beneficiary communities were also encouraged to grow trees of their own in the same plots as our project beneficiaries which resulted in the formation of woodlots.
