WHO WE ARE

©BAFROW

The Foundation for Research on Women’s Health, Productivity and the Environment (BAFROW) is a national non-governmental, non-profit organization based in The Gambia. Our activities are financed and sustained through grants and donations, income generated from BAFROW-supported initiatives and proceeds from BAFROW Medical Centre. Our work complements the development efforts of the Government of The Gambia and other national partners, contributing to the achievement of national priorities and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our Holistic and Integrated Social and Economic Empowerment Program improves the health and economic well-being of vulnerable and marginalized groups—especially women and girls—in both rural and urban communities. Over the years, BAFROW has equipped women, girls and community members with the knowledge and skills needed to improve health, secure sustainable incomes and actively contribute to the development of their families and communities.

Recognizing the benefits of these interventions, and in response to community demand for improved and affordable health services, we revised our strategic direction to reduce dependence on donor funding and move toward a more sustainable model of healthcare delivery. As a result, we established BAFROW Medical Centre—a separate entity from BAFROW—designed to provide comprehensive health services while generating resources to sustain our broader mission.

  • Increase rights for women and girls through reduced prejudice and discrimination
  • Increase the contribution of women and girls to the development of their families, communities and country through health, economic, social, and political empowerment
  • Increase the number of empowered men promoting and supporting women’s and girls’ empowerment
  • Improve the quality of health care services for all

Complement the development efforts of the Government of The Gambia and other national partners through our holistic and integrated Social and Economic Empowerment Program geared towards improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable and marginalized people, especially women and girls, in targeted rural and urban communities.
