Combatting Practices that are Harmful to Health, including FGM/C

Our Comprehensive Integrated Program for the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting (FGM/C) transforms ex-circumcisers into literate community health mobilizers, educators and behaviour change influencers committed to influencing practising circumcisers to stop the cutting. They work closely with community leaders (religious, traditional, local authorities), men and youth in changing behaviours for FGM/C abandonment; and advocate for an alternative rites of passage for girls that exclude all forms of interference with the female genitalia using our Curriculum for Alternative Rites of Passage. We train them to assume leadership roles in our efforts to end the practice and in the adoption of positive practices that protect women and girls and promote their advancement.

From 1996 to 2009, we implemented awareness raising activities on the health implications of FGM/C and other harmful traditional practices, empowered women through functional education and provided livelihood opportunities for circumcisers. Religious and traditional leaders were involved and engaged in the campaign; youth were mobilized to advocate for the elimination of the practice through BAFROW Youth Advocacy Group; services were provided in case management of health complications resulting from FGM/C; and the first large-scale alternative rites of passage ceremony was conducted for 150 girls from six beneficiary villages.
