Functional Literacy Program

BAFROW fosters a culture of functional education that empowers women with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions in their personal lives, families and communities. Our approach goes beyond literacy—it cultivates critical thinking, agency and leadership.

Program Strategy

We established literacy programs in communities benefiting from our interventions to provide structured education across a wide range of topics. These programs provided our beneficiaries with the ability to access, understand, interpret and apply information relevant to their health, rights and livelihoods, such as reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, improved nutrition, gender-based violence prevention, and civil responsibilities.

Recognizing the close association of rural women and girls with the land and river, beneficiaries were also introduced to climate change and environmental issues, supporting government-led community adaptation efforts.

Promoted Practices

Through these literacy programs, we emphasized:

Regular medical check-ups and early antenatal bookings to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity to ensur timely detection of complications and safer outcomes for mothers and babies
Good mother and child nutrition for the healthy growth and development of children, improved immunity and enhanced cognitive outcomes, while strengthening maternal health and resilience
Proper hygiene and sanitation practices for the prevention of communicable diseases and the promotion of healthier households and communities
The importance of girls’ education through secondary level for the empowerment of girls, delaying early marriage and reducing teenage pregnancy
Abandonment of FGM and other harmful traditional practices for the protection of women and girls from lifelong health complications and trauma, while preserving positive cultural traditions that uphold dignity, equality and well-being

Access to knowledge from our Functional Literacy Program fostered:

Changes in perceptions and belief systems
A gradual transformation of attitudes toward critical thinking and healthier practices
Stronger community ownership of women’s empowerment and protection

Educational Materials

We developed materials in the languages chosen by communities such as BAFROW’s simple reader Better Life (Baluu Niimaa) Series in English, Mandinka, Fula and Jola. Each of these pictorial books covers a specific topic, including:

Breastfeeding and common breast ailments
Common reproductive health problems in women
Female Genital Mutilation
Menstruation and menopause
Reproductive health problems for men
Sexually transmitted infections
Teenage pregnancy

Human rights documents such as the Maputo Protocol and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) were translated into local languages as part of our human rights module.

Using their literacy skills, enrolled women developed their own IEC materials (e.g. posters, fliers, newsletters) to share with their community members. Under the Baluu Niimaa title, they were also supported to develop story books of local tales promoting women’s empowerment.

BAFROW’s Better Life (Baluu Niimaa) Series offers simple reader materials on diverse health issues affecting both men and women, available in English, Mandinka, Fula and Jola.

Skills Development

Alongside literacy and numeracy, beneficiaries gained skills in basic business management, interpersonal communication and lobbying.

Given the cross-cutting nature of our Functional Literacy and Economic Empowerment programs, we also trained our beneficiaries in interpersonal communication and lobbying, as well as numeracy and basic business management. These skills equipped them to manage small businesses successfully and to engage in community mobilization activities, enabling them to influence positive change within their communities while achieving economic independence.

Employment and Community Roles

Through our Economic Empowerment and the Environment Program, graduates were supported to start up small businesses or employed in diverse roles, including:

Community Health Mobilizers
Nurse Assistants at BAFROW Family Clinics
Managers and employees at our skill centre

Impact

Graduates of our Literacy Program were encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with non-beneficiary family members and friends thereby enabling male groups and larger communities to benefit as well.

This collective approach helped communities move forward strategically in advancing women’s reproductive health and contribute to the reduction of gender inequalities.

We have implemented over 20 programs in different communities, reaching more than 2,000 women.
