OUR PROGRAM

Our Holistic and Integrated Social and Economic Empowerment Program enhances the health and economic well-being of vulnerable and marginalized groups, with a particular focus on women and girls in both rural and urban communities. We operate at both community and policy levels, designing programs within the framework of civic empowerment, people’s participation and ownership to ensure sustainability.

By combining health interventions with economic empowerment, our programs equip beneficiaries with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to lead healthier lives, achieve financial stability and actively contribute to the development of their communities.

Our approach is multi-dimensional and multi-sectoral, grounded in the principle that sound health is inseparable from:

  • Economic well-being, knowledge and skills
  • Conducive physical and social environments
  • Good personal and environmental hygiene
  • The elimination of harmful cultural practices that undermine the health and well-being of women and girls

By incorporating functional literacy and economic empowerment into all our programs, we strengthen gender equality and mainstream poverty alleviation across our work.

Our strategies empower communities and create health demand through:

  • Community and stakeholder mobilization
  • Awareness-raising and campaigns
  • Education and behaviour change
  • Capacity strengthening and advocacy

We collaborate with government institutions, NGOs, youth groups, development partners, private sector organizations and the media. A key emphasis is placed on the active involvement of youth, men and community leaders in our projects and activities.

We intervene in two core areas:

1. Health Care and Health Delivery through BAFROW Family Clinics
2. Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection, ensuring long-term impact and sustainability

Health Care and Health Delivery

BAFROW Family Clinics

Our community clinics offer integrated preventive and clinical care, maternal and child health care and nutritional orientation to women and their families.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Information, Education, Communication and Counselling

We use a combination of community-based actors, educated through our Functional Literacy Program, to implement our information and education activities and campaigns.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Maternity Care Program using the Kaabilo Baama Initiative

The Initiative contributes to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in communities by educating and training kaabilo baamas for improved maternity practices.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Obstetric Fistula Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program

We offer comprehensive preventive and treatment services through our Obstetric Fistula Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Combatting Practices that are Harmful to Women’s Health including FGM

We mobilize and empower influential groups such as circumcisers and their assistants to affect change towards ending practices that are harmful to women and girls.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Functional Literacy Program

We offer women structured education programs which enable them to understand and adopt positive practices relating to sexual and reproductive and maternal and child health,  nutrition, gender-based violence, and women’s and girls’ rights.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Economic Empowerment and the Environment

Women are offered different livelihood skills as well as business and financial management training at our Skills Training and Empowerment Centre to help them overcome poverty.

BAFROW Model Centre

Our Model Centre showcases how the interface between access to reproductive and maternal and infant health care; counselling and information on health, nutrition and women’s rights; literacy and education; skills provision; micro-credit; and management of finances can achieve substantial and significant impact on women’s economic empowerment and, ultimately, the reduction of poverty in communities.

We Contribute to Preventing and Managing Malnutrition

Known as Dundal Njoboo in Wollof and Dimbaayaa Balundoo in Mandinaga (a family’s sustenance), BAFROW’s High Protein Mix is high in protein, rich in nutrients and packed with a wide range of vitamins.

Analysed and certified by an expert nutritionist, the cereal has proven highly effective in counteracting malnutrition among both children and adults, making it a trusted, community-driven solution for better health and nutrition.

BAFROW Model Centre Community Market Outlet

An incentive for increased agricultural and horticultural produce, we assisted the women of Mandinaba Village in West Coast Region with a clean, safe and conducive outlet for their commodities and products by piloting a small market complex in the village.
