About BAFROW

The Foundation for Research on Women’s Health, Productivity and the Environment (BAFROW) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing women’s health and empowerment. Our initiatives focus on reducing maternal and neonatal mortality through social and community mobilization, advocacy and clinical services; supporting obstetric fistula patients with treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration programs; promoting women’s and community empowerment through livelihood and capacity-building activities; and preventing harmful traditional practices that negatively affect the health and well-being of women and girls.

Our Program

Our Holistic and Integrated Social and Economic Empowerment Program equips women and their communities with the tools to take charge of their reproductive health. The program places a strong emphasis on reducing maternal and neonatal mortality through the adoption of positive health practices and improved access to medical care. Further, we contribute to advancing government efforts to address challenges related to women’s health and financial sustainability.

We mainstream gender and poverty alleviation into all our programs and intervene in two areas:

  1. Health Care and Health Delivery through BAFROW Family Clinics, and
  2. Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Health Care and Health Delivery

BAFROW Family Clinics

Our Community Clinics deliver integrated preventive and clinical care, with a strong focus on maternal and child health. In addition, they provide nutritional guidance and orientation, ensuring women, their families and their communities have access to holistic support for healthier lives.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Maternity Care using the Kaabilo Baama Initiative

The Initiative contributes to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by educating and training kaabilo baamas in improved maternity practices. This community-based approach enhances safe delivery, promotes positive health behaviours and ensures women and new-borns receive the care they need.

Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection

Obstetric Fistula Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program

Our Obstetric Fistula Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre provides comprehensive preventive and treatment services that ensure women affected by obstetric fistula receive holistic care. Beyond medical treatment, the centre supports rehabilitation and reintegration, helping women restore their health and dignity when placed within their communities.

BAFROW Medical Centre

BAFROW Medical Centre is a self-sustained, commercial hospital that offers comprehensive medical services to all. It also runs a Family Medicine Residency Program, fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.

As a Social Enterprise, BAFROW Medical Centre reinvests part of its proceeds to support projects under the Foundation for Research on Women’s Health, Productivity and the Environment (BAFROW). This model ensures quality healthcare delivery is paired with sustainable support for community-focused initiatives.

We Contribute to Preventing and Managing Malnutrition

Known as Dundal Njoboo in Wollof and Dimbaayaa Balundoo in Mandinaga (a family’s sustenance), BAFROW’s High Protein Mix is high in protein, rich in nutrients and packed with a wide range of vitamins.

Analysed and certified by an expert nutritionist, the cereal has proven highly effective in counteracting malnutrition among both children and adults, making it a trusted, community-driven solution for better health and nutrition.
