Maternity Care using the Kaabilo Baama Initiative

The project aims to improve maternal and child health and the overall reproductive health of women of childbearing age, therefore contributing to the attainment of national and international targets for the reduction of infant and maternal mortality.
As a strategy, we build on the strengths of the kaabilo (community) system – characterized by community-based occupational, task-oriented socio-economic groups – and its modest attempts at economic empowerment to alleviate livelihood constraints.
We train kaabilo baamas (community mothers) and other regional structures using Participatory Rural Communication Appraisal (PRCA), which enables them to engage with their community members in discussing, identifying, analyzing, understanding and finding solutions to a given problem or issue that is specific to the communities.
With the help of various tools, kabilo baamas are able to come up with qualitative and quantitative information and data on the identified issue(s) for deeper understanding and better identification of solutions.
The women are trained in counselling in the area of reproductive health care to include required antenatal care and services, labour, delivery, postnatal and infant care as well as the advantages of delivering at the health facilities. Each community-based health counsellor is provided with an activity form to use for each pregnant woman counselled and another form for the summary of monthly activities. The activity forms are enhanced by pictorial expression of the danger signs during pregnancy which facilitates the collection of data. Danger signs graphically demonstrated include high blood pressure, excessive vomiting, severe headache, bleeding, draining water early (liquor) and anemia.
These women share their wealth of knowledge with their community members through regular community sensitizations and dialogues as well as at the individual level with women and couples through education and counselling sessions.
