Baalu niima (Better Life) for ex-circumcisers and their communities

This component ensured ex-circumcisers retained their social status and were respected in their community. Alongside training and educating our beneficiaries as advocates for FGM/C abandonment, we also provided them with various skills for an alternative source of income, including in baking, tailoring and tie and dye. Beneficiaries who showed potential were given seed money to set up or expand small businesses, which benefited both their families and their communities.
Due to their diverse knowledge on sexual and reproductive health subjects, the trained ex-circumcisers and their assistants served as ‘knowledge banks’ for their communities, and held one-to-one counselling sessions and dialogues with women on FGM/C and sexual reproductive health and rights issues. Fifty (50) ex-circumcisers benefited from this component.
