ABOUT US
©BAFROW Medical Centre
BAFROW Medical Centre is a national, self-sustained clinical institution operating as a Social Enterprise. It was established to advance national efforts in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by providing integrated sexual, reproductive, maternal and child health services. In addition, we offer comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, contributing to the reduction of illness and preventable deaths.
Proceeds from the hospital’s services and activities support community-based initiatives under our NGO arm–the Foundation for Research on Women’s Health, Productivity and the Environment (BAFROW)–including our Well Woman and Family Health Clinic (WWFHC) and selected empowerment programs at the BAFROW Model Centre.
BAFROW Medical Centre also represents a direct response to the government’s call for private and NGO sector investment in healthcare, reinforcing our commitment to improving the quality of reproductive health and overall well-being of people living in The Gambia.
Our Background
©BAFROW Medical Centre
BAFROW Medical Centre was born out of BAFROW’s commitment to sustain the community achievements it had secured through donor-supported programs, and in response to growing community demand for accessible, affordable and improved health services.
As donor funding became increasingly limited, it was imperative for the Foundation to revise its strategic direction—reducing reliance on external support and moving toward a more sustainable model for delivering comprehensive healthcare to communities.
Over the years, several reforms were introduced to strengthen this vision, among which the establishment of BAFROW Medical Centre stands as a cornerstone initiative, ensuring continuity, resilience and long-term impact in community health and empowerment investments.

Ethical Framework for Clinical Practice
BAFROW Medical Centre’s Ethical Framework for Clinical Practice serves as a safeguard for both our patients and staff, and reinforces the highest standards of ethical healthcare practice at our facility.
The Framework establishes the moral foundation for clinical decision‑making and emphasizes nine critical guiding principles that ensure patient care is delivered with integrity, respect and fairness.

BAFROW is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing the health and empowerment of women, girls and communities. Through its charity projects, BAFROW focuses on social mobilization, information, education and advocacy to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality; treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration of obstetric fistula patients with a huge prevention component; livelihood and empowerment initiatives that strengthen women’s economic independence and community resilience; and prevention of harmful traditional practices that compromise the health and rights of women and girls.
By combining medical services with advocacy and community-based programs, BAFROW continues to champion holistic approaches that improve health outcomes and foster sustainable economic empowerment.
