FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

BAFROW Medical Centre is proud to be an accredited centre of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) for residency training in Family Medicine.

The program is designed to produce highly skilled, compassionate and versatile Family Physicians equipped to deliver comprehensive, patient-centred care across all levels of the healthcare system.

Family Medicine is a unique specialty that provides continuous, comprehensive care to individuals, families and communities—addressing physical, psychological and social dimensions of health without limitation by age, gender or disease category.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The residency program follows the standard WACP pathway leading to:

Membership (MWACP)
Fellowship (FWACP)
Training spans structured clinical rotations and academic activities over the required duration.

Residents undergo supervised training in:

Internal Medicine
Paediatrics
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
General Surgery
Psychiatry
Emergency Medicine
Laboratory Medicine
Community and Rural Health
Family Medicine Clinics (Urban & Rural Practice)
Radiology
Ophthalmology
ENT Surgery
Oral Health

These rotations ensure broad-based competence in managing diverse clinical conditions across all age groups.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

1. Clinical Training

Hands-on patient care under consultant supervision
Exposure to acute, chronic, preventive, and rehabilitative care
Procedural skills development

2. Academic program

Weekly seminars and case presentations
Grand rounds and morbidity/mortality meetings
Journal clubs and evidence-based discussions

3. Research and Dissertation

Residents are required to:

Conduct supervised research
Submit and defend a dissertation as part of training

4. Workplace-Based Assessment

Continuous evaluation using logbooks and structured tools
Competency-based progression aligned with WACP standards

5. Faculty and Supervision

Our program is led by experienced Consultant Family Physicians (FWACP) who provide:

Structured mentorship
Clinical supervision
Career guidance

Consultants actively participate in teaching, administration and continuous improvement of the residency program.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants must:

Possess a recognized medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
Be fully registered with the relevant Medical and Dental Council
Have completed internship (housemanship)
Pass West Africa College of Physician (WACP) primary examination in Family Medicine
