The safety of patients has become a major global public health concern, with increasing reports worldwide of unsafe environments, improper use of technologies and low-quality services at some health facilities. These challenges have, at times, resulted in patients being inadvertently harmed or even losing their lives. If left unaddressed, such issues could undermine the progress already achieved in healthcare delivery and hinder the attainment of global health targets.

Recognizing the urgency of this challenge, the World Health Assembly in 2019 adopted a resolution on ‘Global Action on Patient Safety’, designating 17th September as World Patient Safety Day. This annual observance calls for collective action—from policymakers to grassroots communities—to raise awareness and strengthen measures that keep patients safe.

The theme for this year’s World Patient Safety Day was “Safe Maternal and New-born Care” with the slogan “Act now for safe and respectful childbirth.” At BAFROW Medical Centre, we acknowledge the vulnerability of women and new-borns during delivery and reaffirm our commitment to providing quality care and ensuring their safety.

Our safety protocols—covering COVID-19 prevention, control and treatment—are strictly adhered to by all staff in all our units. They include:

• Standard operating procedures for infection prevention and control
• Rigorous staff training on patient handling and safe use of medical equipment

Through these measures, we continue to align with both national and international standards in maternal and new-born care.
