Commemoration
Breast Cancer Awareness Month – October, 2021
Breast cancer affects millions of women worldwide each year, putting it among the most common cancers in women and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality.
The World Health Organization reported 684,996 breast cancer–related deaths in 2020. Although breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, it does not have to be fatal. Sadly, many lives are lost unnecessarily because the disease is often detected at an advanced stage, when treatment options are limited and outcomes are poor.
While all women are at risk, those with a family history of breast cancer and women over the age of 50 face a higher likelihood of developing the illness. Yet many suffer in silence without adequate support and countless others are unable to access the care and treatment they need.
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, people across the world are urged to rise up and come together to support women who are at risk or who are living with the disease.
How We Are Contributing
At BAFROW Medical Centre, we continue to play our part by:
- Encouraging self-care: We urge at-risk women to practise regular self-breast examinations at home for self-empowerment in detecting changes early
- Providing counselling: Through our routine counselling sessions, we emphasize the importance of early detection and guide women on when to seek medical attention
- Creating awareness: Our awareness activities highlight the role of family and loved ones—especially spouses—in offering the right kind of support to women fighting cancer
Together, through knowledge and action, we can reduce the burden of breast cancer and save lives.

Take Action This Breast Cancer Awareness Month
If you believe you may be at risk but have never undergone a mammogram screening, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Mammography remains the most effective method for detecting tiny tumours early, when treatment is most successful. The procedure is quick, painless and—most importantly—it can save your life.
We invite you to visit our Serrekunda branch for a screening and take this important step toward protecting your health.
